Welcome to Power House. The place where God Resides. We pray your experience with us, be it online or in one of our worship services, is one that leaves you feeling the Love of Christ!
Pastor W. David Sumlin, Jr has been noted as a man after God’s own heart; he is a lover of God’s people and a true servant!
Pastor Sumlin was born into the Church of God in Christ over 50 years ago. His parents, Deacon W. David Sumlin, Sr. and Mother Mattie P. Sumlin served diligently at Bailey Temple, and passed the ministry of serving in God’s house on to their son and dedicated him to God at birth.
As a child Pastor Sumlin was active in all of the of the children’s units within the church: Cradle Roll, Sunshine Band, and Purity Class. He attended Sunday School and Young Peoples Willing Workers (YPWW), and proved to be an avid learner of God’s word.
As he grew into manhood, he accepted salvation and was filled with the Holy Ghost and began serving the church and its leaders as directed by God. In 1984 he found his good thing, fell madly in love, and was wedded in holy matrimony to Derica Renee Taylor in October 1985. Pastor Sumlin and Derica Sunlin have 2 children, Britney and David Jamar, one daughter-in-law Jasmine Sumlin, and 3 beautiful granddaughters Amber, Faith and Nyah.
Pastor Sumlin became an ordained Elder and was well prepared and anointed to stand in those shoes. Prior to his official ordination Pastor Sumlin served his late pastor, Superintendent James Madison Johnson, and the church as a Deacon, Junior Sunday School Superintendent, as well as a leader for the Young Men’s ministry. Never one to shy away from any work in the church, he worked as the church janitor, van driver and media tech. After his appointment as an elder, Pastor Sumlin opened the church services, acted as the Sunday School Superintendent, facilitated church services, acted as the Church Administrative Assistant, took on the responsibility for the business of the church, led YPWW and the evening services. Then after everyone had gone home, he ensured the church was safely closed. Yes, he has worked in every aspect of church ministry!
Prior to the passing of Superintendent Johnson, the Lord confirmed to Elder Sumlin that he would pastor a church. In 2012, and at the divine leading of God, Elder Sumlin took heed to his calling as Pastor and formed Power House Evangelistic Ministries COGIC. With his wife Derica by his side, this anointed man of God stepped into this assignment!
Derica graduated from Immaculate All Girls High School. After high school, Derica attended Western Michigan University to study child psychology. She later went to Christian Leadership Institute. While there, she received certificates in Ministry Foundation, Christian Basics, Christian Leader Connection and Christian Leaders Getting Started.
Derica Sumlin connected with Bailey Temple Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Bishop John Seth Bailey when she was nine years old. She sang in the Youth Choir and participated in both the Sunshine Band and Purity Class.
At 17 years old, Derica accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She received the baptism of the Holy Ghost shortly after her 18th birthday, and has served the Lord ever since. She served and operated under pastor James Madison Johnson, her uncle but better known as her dad. She was a faithful teacher in the Youth Sunday School Department.
Derica reconnected with fellow parishioner William David Sumlin Jr. About one year later, in 1984 they were joined in marriage, and in 1985 began building their family while serving the Lord together. They are the proud parents of Britney Renee, David Jamar, daughter-in-law Jasmine, and granddaughters Amber, Faith, and Nyah.
While attending Bailey Temple, Derica held the position of Sunshine Band President. She later accepted the role as Purity Class President, serving in this position for over 10 years. She received awards for Leader of the Year. She also served as President of the Young Ladies Christian Council (YLCC). Derica worked well with the youth and was an intricate part in helping shape the youth into becoming God fearing young adults.
After the death of her dad/Pastor, her husband accepted his call to pastor. Her husband William David Sumlin Jr. is Founder of Power House Evangelistic Ministries of Michigan Church of God in Christ. Derica is currently the First Lady of Power House Evangelistic Ministries, Head of the Women’s Department, and Head of Children’s Church. Together, the Sumlins make a meaningful difference in the world through serving the Lord with intention and purpose. Whether it’s the seven years they spent cleaning their previous church, or ministering one-onone, they lead by example.
In short, Derica Sumlin is a woman who loves the Lord! She loves her family and her church. Her greatest role model is her aunt, First Lady Beverly A. Johnson. Derica Sumlin lives what she believes — her desire is to Exalt the Savior, Edify the Saints, and Evangelize the Sinners!
